APOGEE

Privacy Policy

Effective September 26, 2026 · Developer: Nicholas Trautman · Contact: nhtrautman@gmail.com

This policy covers APOGEE, the field survey instrument available as a web app at https://majorturkey.app and as the Android app app.majorturkey.apogee (including the version for Amazon Fire tablets). "We" means the developer, Nicholas Trautman.

The short version

  • No accounts or sign-in, no ads, and no analytics or tracking tools.
  • Sensor readings, location, camera images, and microphone levels are processed on your device. They are not sent to us.
  • Your logs, map trail, and settings are stored only on your device. Files are exported only when you tap an export button.
  • Because the app loads from the internet, a few service providers receive basic technical data such as your IP address. They are listed below.
  • We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

What the app uses on your device

APOGEE reads a sensor only while the app is open and you are using a feature that needs it. Android asks for your permission the first time a feature needs location, the camera, or the microphone. You can say no, and only that feature stops working.

  • Motion, magnetometer, and light sensors: show acceleration, rotation, tilt, magnetic field, heading, and light level. Compass calibration values are saved on your device.
  • Location (GPS or Wi-Fi based): shows position, speed, course, and accuracy, draws your map trail and waypoints, and tags readings and exports. Used only while the app is open. APOGEE does not use background location.
  • Nearby Wi-Fi networks (Android app only): when you scan in the NET bay, the app lists nearby networks with their name (SSID), access-point address (BSSID), channel, signal strength, and security type. Android treats Wi-Fi scan results as location information, so this uses the Location permission. APOGEE never connects to or changes your networks.
  • Camera: shows a live preview and analyzes color and brightness on your device. A still image is created only when you tap Capture and saved only when you choose to save it. Saved stills can include a text stamp with your coordinates.
  • Microphone: measures sound level and frequency spectrum on your device. APOGEE does not record audio to a file and does not send audio to us.
  • Translator (XLT bay): the translator uses only the phrasebook built into the app and works offline. Text you type or say is matched against that phrasebook on your device and is never sent to us or to any translation service.
  • Connection type: shows whether you are on Wi-Fi or cellular and the estimated speed.
  • NFC and Bluetooth (supported web browsers only): the RF/NFC and Bluetooth bays use the browser's Web NFC and Web Bluetooth APIs. In browsers that offer those APIs, APOGEE reads a tag or connects to a device only when you start that action and pick the device. The Android app (including on Fire tablets) runs in Android's WebView, which does not offer these APIs, so the app never uses NFC or Bluetooth.

What is stored on your device

APOGEE keeps the following in the app's local storage on your device: a recent activity log (up to 80 entries, which can include readings and coordinates), your map trail and waypoints (up to 800 trail points and 120 waypoints), translator language preferences, and compass calibration values.

This data stays on your device unless you export it. To delete it, use the in-app Clear buttons, clear the app's data in Android Settings, clear the site data in your browser, or uninstall the app. Exported files (CSV, GPX, GeoJSON, geo.txt, JPEG, text reports) are saved only when you tap an export button. In the Android app they go to the Download/APOGEE folder, where other apps you have given file access may be able to read them.

Data that leaves your device

APOGEE loads from the internet, so these providers receive some technical data:

  • Web hosting (Vercel Inc.): the app is served from majorturkey.app, which is hosted on Vercel. Like any web server, it receives your IP address, your device and browser details (the Android app adds "APOGEE-Android" and its version to these), the pages and files requested, and the time. Vercel sets one technical cookie so that all files come from the same version of the site. If you unlock the web version with your checkout email, the site also sets one cookie that remembers this browser is unlocked for up to a year; it holds a one-way hash of that email, not the email itself. We do not use either cookie for tracking, and we have not added analytics.
  • Google Fonts (Google LLC): the app's typefaces load from Google's font servers, which receive your IP address and browser details.
  • grok.com (xAI): APOGEE was built with the Grok app builder, and its pages load a small script from grok.com. grok.com receives your IP address and browser details when the script loads.
  • Voice input in some web browsers: in browsers that support speech recognition (such as Google Chrome), voice input in the XLT bay uses the browser's own speech service, which the browser maker may process on its servers.
  • Links you open: outside websites (for example, WebODM) open in your browser and follow their own privacy policies.
  • Your device's web engine: the Android app displays APOGEE using the web engine built into your device (Android System WebView or Amazon WebView). The app opts out of WebView usage-metrics reporting.

App stores and purchases

If you get APOGEE from the Amazon Appstore, Amazon processes your purchase and may add its own code to the app to work with the Appstore (for example, license checks and app analytics). Amazon handles that data under its own privacy notice. We receive only reports from Amazon, such as sales and download counts. We do not receive your payment details.

If you buy the Android app directly from us, payment is handled on a Stripe checkout page under the Stripe Privacy Policy (https://stripe.com/privacy). Stripe shares purchase details with us, such as your email address and payment status, so we can deliver your download, unlock the web version for you, send receipts, and help with support or refunds. We never receive your full card number.

What APOGEE does not do

  • No user accounts or sign-in.
  • No advertising and no advertising IDs.
  • No analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking tools.
  • No uploading of your sensor readings, location, photos, audio, or Wi-Fi lists to us.
  • No selling or sharing of personal information.

Children

APOGEE is a general-audience tool and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

All of APOGEE's network traffic uses HTTPS. Data stored by the app stays in the app's storage on your device. Protect your device with a screen lock.

Your choices

Apart from direct purchase records, we do not hold personal data about you, so there is usually nothing on our side to access, correct, or delete. You can delete all APOGEE data on your device at any time as described above. For questions or privacy requests, including about purchase records, email nhtrautman@gmail.com. For data held by the providers listed above, see their privacy policies.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the new version at this address with a new effective date. If a change significantly affects how data is handled, for example adding analytics, we will say so in the app or its store listing before the change takes effect.
